Format #5 - Lattice Binding
An Explanation of Series Books

Format #5

  • Years Published: About 1960 to 1963
  • Height: Approximately 7½ inches
  • Width: Approximately 3/4 to 1 inch
  • Depth: Approximately 5 inches
  • Dust Jackets: Full-color paper
  • Endpapers: Heavy paper, single color art with shading, or light paper and black line art
  • Page Tops: Single color topstain

This less familiar format was used for the new series starting from about 1960–63. Everything is pretty much the same as the tweed books –– colored page tops, single-color endpapers, full-color dust jackets, etc. The binding was more like an irregular lattice pattern, though. This format was very short-lived, and only two series that I know of were made in the format, besides the Janet Lambert books. The binding only came in two colors.

Memorable Series Books Beginning in this Format

    The Stratemeyer Syndicate

The Stratemeyer Syndicate started the Bret King series, and published eight of the nine volumes in this format.

    Andy Adams

The excellent Biff Brewster series contained 13 titles, the first 10 of which were published in this format. Four of the books were written by Peter Harkins who also collaborated with Hal Goodwin on some of the Rick Brant books. Each of the books in this series featured a different region or country, as seen in the titles.
